Kortan’s Crib: Varna, Bulgaria edition

varna bulgaria airbnb complex

Last Updated on June 16, 2024 by Ellen

It’s one of the best deals we’ve ever gotten on Airbnb (in my opinion). A nice one-bedroom apartment in Varna, Bulgaria.

The price: $20.07 per day.

If you’ve never heard of Varna – check out the map and photos below.

As you can see, Varna is a beach destination on the Black Sea. And we enjoy the beach – and the huge park and pedestrian zones abutting it – almost every day. Yep, it’s like a summer beach vacation here.

The apartment itself is a comfortable mid-range, ground-floor unit amidst a large communist-era block of grey, rusting, cookie-cutter housing towers. Our apartment is in a more modern and colorful complex.

It’s an interesting place. Clean, quiet, safe, and friendly in a charming eastern European way… lol.  Very similar to where we stayed in Split, Croatia back in 2018. It’s “real life” Bulgaria. It’s our temporary home from August 15 to September 15.

Below is another Kortn’s Crib, a quick video tour of exactly what you can get in Varna, Bulgaria for $20 per day.

Earth Vagabonds headquarters while in Varna, Bulgaria.

As I say in the video, although Varna is a beach town — we are NOT near the beach.  In fact, it takes 20 to 30 minutes using the $1 public city bus to get to the shore two miles away (including walks to the bus stops at each end)… depending on which stretch of beach you desire. (FYI, ride sharing is banned in Bulgaria — taxis are common).

So THAT is why our apartment is $20 per day. In fact, when booking the place a few months ago, I noticed most similar apartments close to the Varna beaches started at over $1,000 per month. Many were $1,500 and more! Europe is not cheap.

This is why we feel our place is a great deal. We literally saved hundreds of dollars. And we’ve still been at the busy Black Sea beaches (some of the best in East Europe) during high season.

As slow travelers, we don’t need to pay crazy rent to always be in the best or hippest area. We do that for short stays if necessary. But during a month-long stay we slowly explore and enjoy everything – so our living location isn’t that important.

Coming soon I’ll post our expense report for our month in Varna, Bulgaria . We have about a week remaining before we take a bus to Istanbul, Turkey.

As always, be thankful and generous, happy trails & more beer.

Life is NOW!
